News: Malawi's Naleji Builds Momentum as a Dual Threat in Hip Hop and Production

Lilongwe-based rapper and producer Naleji, born Winston Malata, is steadily establishing himself as one of the more distinctive voices within Malawi's evolving hip hop landscape, backed by a growing catalogue that reflects both versatility and artistic maturity. 

Raised in an environment shaped by his older brothers' influence, Naleji's connection to hip hop culture began early, a foundation that continues to inform his sound today. His music blends East Coast hip hop elements with authentic Malawian storytelling, creating a style that resonates with both local and broader audiences while maintaining a strong sense of identity.

Over the years, Naleji has built a body of work that highlights his revolution as an artist. His early work includes a collaborative tape with his former crew, FiringSquad, which introduced him to the scene and laid the groundwork for his career. In 2021, he released his album XCVII, a project that helped define his artistic direction and expand his reach among listeners. 

In 2023, he took a notable creative turn with ACKNAWLXDGE, a project that primarily showcased his abilities as a producer, with minimal vocal contributions from himself. The move underscored his versatility and willingness to explore different aspects of music creation. He returned to the mic in 2024 with the EP "The Calm Before The Storm", reaffirming his presence as a recording artist and signaling a new phase in his journey.

Alongside his projects, Naleji has also released a number of singles that continue to strengthen his presence in the local music space. Tracks such as "Njinga," "Yankho," and "Mzake Wa Mzanga" (featuring Sarah Blvck) have contributed to his growing traction, with "Njinga" in particular gaining notable attention and helping expand his audience. His 2026 releases, including "Selebu" and "Mzake Wa Mzanga" are also performing well and further cementing his consistency.   

Known for his ability to navigate different sounds while maintaining creative control, Naleji continues to stand as both a rapper and producer. As Malawi's hip hop scene expands, his approach reflects a broader shift toward artists who are not only performers, but also architects of their own sound.  

 

With consistent output and a clear artistic direction, Naleji's trajectory suggests continued growth, positioning him as one of the notable contributors to the country's contemporary music landscape.
